ABOUT DALHOUSIE
In western Himachal Pradesh, Dalhousie is a hill station par excellence, full of old
world charm and holds lingering echos of the Raj era. It covers an area of 14 sq. km.
and is built on five hills - Kathlog, Patreyn, Tehra, Bakrota and Balun. It is named
after the British governor General of the 19th century, Lord Dalhousie. The town's
height varies between 525 m and 2,378 m. Dalhousie has charming colonial
architecture, including some beautiful churches. Its location presents panoramic views
of the plains and like a long silver line, the river Ravi twists and turns below
Dalhousie. The spectacular snow-covered Dhauladhar mountains are also visible form
this enchanting town. Dalhousie is known for its bracing climate, picturesque
landscapes and beautiful picnic spots. The most distinctive features are the level walks
and interesting tracks amidst dense forest. It is one of the best and inexpensive hill
stations. Dalhousie is also a gateway to the ancient Chamba Hill State, now Chamba
District of the Himachal Pradesh, India. This hill region is a repository of ancient
Hindu culture, art, temples, and handicrafts preserved under the longest running single
dynasty since the mid-6th century.
ACCESS
Dalhousie is 485 km by road from Delhi. Regular deluxe buses & taxies are available
from Delhi. The closest railhead & airport is Pathankot at a distance of 72 km. Taxis
and buses are easily available from Pathankot to Dalhousie.
CLIMATE
In winter, the temperature hovers around freezing point with snowfall, heavy woolens
are required. In summer, the climate is mild and light woolens / cottons are
recommended.
